#WhyIRun: Chase’s Story

Meet Chase, a brave and resilient 4-year-old from London, ON, who is inspiring his family, friends, and community to step up for kids affected by Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM)—a rare autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness and skin rashes. This year, Chase’s family is joining Team Cassie + Friends to raise awareness and funds to support families navigating life with JDM and other rheumatic diseases.

Chase’s Story

We want to share our story about our sweet and brave 4-year-old, Chase. After weeks of unexplained fatigue, muscle weakness, and a rash that started out on his face that wouldn’t go away, Chase has been diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM)—a rare autoimmune disease that affects the muscles, skin, and blood vessels.

JDM is not contagious, and it’s not caused by anything we did or didn’t do. It’s a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, leading to inflammation and weakness. For Chase, this means everyday activities like climbing stairs or lifting toys can be a challenge, and he’s especially sensitive to sunlight.

While there’s no cure yet, we’re grateful that with early diagnosis and the right treatment—including daily medications, physical therapy, monthly Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and lots of love—many children with JDM go on to live full, active lives. Chase has already shown incredible strength and resilience, and we’re hopeful for a bright future ahead.

We are so fortunate to have a large support system from our families and friends as we navigate this chapter of our lives.
