“Life changes at a fast pace in your early 20s.”

Meet Trish.

Life after pediatric care is a journey. I would describe it as a relationship with its ups and downs. High highs when you feel amazing and low lows when finding access to a doctor is tough. I came out of pediatric care five years ago. The first step was to find an adult rheumatologist, which is tough even living in a big city like Toronto. Luckily my neighbour also had rheumatoid arthritis and was able to recommend me to my first-ever adult rheumatologist. I am by no means in love with my rheumatologist, but I find that she is able to answer my questions right away and help me through most of my issues with arthritis. The hardest part about switching to adult care is that, for the first time ever, your rheumatologist doesn’t do everything. If there’s any problem that doesn’t have to do with your arthritis, I’ve been referred to my family doctor in my experience.

But, not only have I been able to experience access to a rheumatologist while I’ve been in Canada. I’ve also experienced taking care of my arthritis abroad. Life changes at a fast pace in your early 20s, and I’ve had the opportunity to live abroad for a year. My first hurdle has always been my disease and carrying my medications. Luckily, I could carry all my medication with me alongside a prescription and proof that it was mine without any concerns. Yes, it is a little more expensive as I did have to purchase a year’s supply of methotrexate and carry it, but I learned that my arthritis could never stop me.

The other constant in my life has been Cassie and Friends. Knowing I have access to a rheumatologist somewhere near me at the drop of an email has changed my life. I breathe easier knowing I could find a rheumatologist anywhere in the world if I tried. Having this community, even after graduating from pediatric care, has been amazing and has taught me so much.

There is so much more I could say about life after pediatric care, and there is so much more I’d love to say and share. But unfortunately, I can’t fit it into a couple of paragraphs.
