The holiday season has always been one of my favourite times of the year—twinkling lights, family gatherings, and cozy nights by the fire. But since Charlie’s Juvenile Arthritis (JIA) diagnosis, we’ve learned that winter holidays come with their own set of challenges for our family. From chilly weather that can worsen joint pain to the hustle and bustle of festive activities, it’s a season that requires a little extra planning, but can still be so wonderful!
Over the years, Charlie and I have discovered a few tricks that help us enjoy all the holiday magic while keeping her comfortable and supported. These tips are tried, tested, and full of love, just like the holidays themselves. Whether it’s finding ways to stay warm, pacing ourselves during busy days, or making time for rest, we’ve learned how to balance the joy of the season with the realities of JIA.
Here’s a peek into how we manage the most wonderful time of the year while keeping arthritis in check. We hope these ideas help bring a little extra comfort and cheer to your holiday season, too!
Pack Extra Medications. Sometimes, the weather can make travel for one day turn into an extended stay! If you are going away, bring medications for 1-2 additional days, just in case!
Set Medication Alarms. The holidays can be so busy and you are constantly on the go, having dinners at family and friends’ houses, and being out of your regular routine. Set an alarm on your phone for medication reminders, as it’s easy to forget.
Modify Activities. Adapt holiday traditions to accommodate your child’s needs. For example, if crafting ornaments or baking is too tiring, choose shorter or less demanding versions of those activities or find a way to accommodate. One time, we baked cookies by sitting on the floor after a day of sore ankles!
Dress for Warmth. Cold weather can worsen joint pain. When heading outdoors, ensure your child is bundled up with layers, gloves, and warm footwear.
Prioritize Physical Activity. Gentle movement, such as stretching, yoga, or swimming, can help alleviate stiffness and improve mobility. Incorporate these activities into your holiday routine.
Remember Holiday Closures! Some locations like your pharmacy or physiotherapists might have reduced hours for the holidays – plan for this in advance as you don’t want to have a gap in medications or show up for an appointment that wasn’t happening!
Prepare for Flare-Ups. Have a plan in place for managing unexpected flare-ups, such as pain-relief options, heat or ice therapy, and ensuring your child has a comfortable space to rest.
Focus on Non-Physical Activities. Enjoy low-energy holiday traditions like reading holiday-themed books, playing board games, or watching festive movies together.
Wash Your Hands! Spending time with so many family members and friends can mean a lot of germs – and sickness during the holiday season is not a fun thing to deal with! Many of our JIA kids are immunocompromised from their medications, so remember to wash your hands, and encourage family members to stay home if they are not feeling well!
Take Time to Rest! The holidays can be busy with activities and gatherings. Schedule downtime to ensure your child has enough rest and recovery time to manage fatigue and pain. This also allows for parents to take time to rest as well.
From my family to yours, we wish you a joyful, peaceful, and pain-free holiday season. May your celebrations be filled with warmth, connection, and hope.
