bridging the gap

improving lives through research, education, connection, and support

We’re living in a time of exciting progress, where scientific breakthroughs are paving the way for better care for children and families dealing with pediatric rheumatic diseases. Every day, dedicated researchers, including those in our CREW Network, are pushing the boundaries of rheumatology care to create a brighter future for all affected.

One big step forward in recent years has been the use of some medications called conventional and biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (c/bDMARDs). These meds are superheroes at fighting inflammation, which is a big deal for kids with JA.

Researchers took a deep dive into the data from two patient groups and found something pretty neat. Between 2005-2010 and 2017-2021, there was a big jump in the use of these drugs, and more kids were hitting those sweet spots of minimally active or inactive disease.

Now, you’d think with all these improvements in disease activity, life for kids and their families would be getting better, right? Well, here’s the kicker: the study found that while disease outcomes were improving, it didn’t necessarily translate to a better quality of life for the kiddos and their parents.

This gap in outcomes and quality of life underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to care that goes beyond medical treatment alone. While advancements in medication are essential, it’s equally crucial to provide families with access to support and community resources. While researching new treatments and a cure is crucial, it’s just as important to focus on expanding the support and community available to children and families facing pediatric rheumatic diseases.

That’s where Cassie + Friends comes in. As Canada’s only non-profit organization dedicated to pediatric rheumatic diseases, we’re here to support children and families every step of the way. We’re building a ‘Connectwork’ of patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and more to ensure that everyone has access to education, research, and support.

As we work towards a future free from pain, it’s not just about improving medication and treatment effectiveness. It’s also about making sure that families have access to the resources and support they need. We invite you to join us in our mission by donating or getting involved in our impactful programs and exciting events. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children and families affected by juvenile arthritis and other rheumatic diseases.
