Presentation Description:
Transitioning to post-secondary can be challenging for all students. Students with disabilities often face greater challenges to make their post-secondary experience successful. Our presentation ‘Transitions Here We Come’ will focus on the smooth transition from secondary to post-secondary including college, university and the work force. Key topics include:
The importance of understanding your role as a self-advocate
The Similarities/Differences between secondary and post-secondary accommodations
• Recommendations for planning, organizing and managing your own accommodations
• Assessments/Documentation necessary for meeting with College/University Accessibility departments, as well as funding for assessments.
• Bursaries and Scholarships as well as other funding opportunities
Speakers: Paul Cook and Deborah Shore Reid
Paul Cook is the Executive Director of the Learning Disabilities Association – London Region as well as an Instructor, Faculty of Education at the Western University, in both the pre-service and additional qualifications departments; specifically, in the areas of special education, exceptionalities and inclusion. Paul is also a former administrator with the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) in both the elementary and secondary panels. He is the recipient of the CMHA Middlesex Champion of Mental Health Award, Faculty of Education AQ Instructors Award of Excellence and Thames Valley District School Board Award of Distinction 2015. His interests lie in the connections between learning struggles and mental wellness, as well as preparing students for secondary school, post-secondary and most importantly their ‘dream career’. Along with Deborah, Paul coordinates and facilitates the association’s work on school transitions. This includes from elementary to secondary and secondary school to post-secondary opportunities.
Deborah Shore Reid has over 25 years of experience in the field of special education. She is a former Resource Teacher and administrator with TVDSB in London where she worked on several board initiatives. She was an instructor at Western University where she taught Additional Teacher Qualifications in Special Education. Currently at LDA-LR in her role of Parent Support and Advocacy Coordinator, Literacy Coordinator, she supports parents by managing a Parent Support Group and Parent Advocacy Workshops. Following her design of the “Moving Up Math” and ReadUP* program at LDA, Deborah also manages and oversees both student programs. She is the lead facilitator of LDA’s Social Emotional Learning program and along with Paul coordinates and facilitates the association’s work on school transitions. This includes from elementary to secondary and secondary school to post-secondary opportunities.
